What this page does, in detail

A portrait cut out on this device. The first cut is the colour solve, free and instant; the person model is one press away with its size printed, the hair matte sits beside it, and every person found is listed so you can keep both or drop one.

The first cutout fits colour models to your own picture, with nothing downloaded, so it is at its best when subject and ground differ in colour or brightness. Fine hair against a busy background, glass, netting and motion blur come back rough — the brushes are the honest fix.

If the subject is a person, the Cut panel offers a network trained on people instead — 5.9 MB the first time you ask for it, kept in this browser afterwards, about 90 ms a picture (estimate, not yet timed on a named device for this site).

Portraits, group photos and selfies. The person model is 6.2 MB and only downloads when you press for it.

How a portrait is cut here

The page opens on the guided selection, which needs nothing downloaded and handles a person against a plain wall well. When the background is busy, press the person model at the top of the Cut panel: a segmentation network trained on people, which runs in your browser on a 192-pixel copy. Its answer is then rebuilt along the edge at full resolution by the edge band, so the boundary stays sharp on a large photo — and the “redraw from the photo’s colours” button lets the colour solve decide the strip along the model’s outline.

  • People only. The person model returns near nothing for objects, pets and products. That is what it was trained for, not a fault.
  • Hair against a similar colour. Dark hair on a dark sofa has no edge to follow. The refine-edge brush helps a little; a different photo helps more.

Questions

Does the photo leave my device?

No. The cutting runs in this tab. If you press for the person model, the model file comes to your browser from our model file server; your photo never goes the other way, and closing the tab is the end of it.

There are two people and it only kept one.

Switch to the person model, which finds every person. Each one appears in the Subjects list on the Cut panel; tick the ones to keep. With the colour solve, a keep stroke on the second person and 'Around my strokes' brings them back.

Will it work on a dog or a product?

The person model is trained on people only. On anything else it returns next to nothing, and the page says so. Use the guided selection, or the studio model on the AI page, for objects and animals.

The hair edge looks cut with scissors.

After the person model, press the hair matte beside it; its soft values feed the edge band. For strands crossing a busy background, paint them with the refine-edge brush on the Refine panel.

Is this a passport photo tool?

It makes the cutout. For a passport upload with a white background at 630 × 810, use the passport photo page, which adds the frame and the checks.
