What this page does, in detail

Your portrait cut out and laid on a plain colour or a two-colour gradient, framed square with room around the head, and previewed through the circle WhatsApp and most apps crop a display picture to.

The first cutout fits colour models to your own picture, with nothing downloaded, so it is at its best when subject and ground differ in colour or brightness. Fine hair against a busy background, glass, netting and motion blur come back rough — the brushes are the honest fix.

If the subject is a person, the Cut panel offers a network trained on people instead — 5.9 MB the first time you ask for it, kept in this browser afterwards, about 90 ms a picture (estimate, not yet timed on a named device for this site).

A head-and-shoulders photo works best. The person model is offered first and downloads only when you press for it.

Sizes, and where they come from

Profile pictures are square on every platform and most of them crop the square to a circle. None of the large apps publishes a single pixel requirement that could be cited, so the sizes offered here — 512, 640, 800 and 1080 pixels — are labelled common practice rather than presented as rules. Larger is safer: apps scale a picture down cleanly and up badly.

Keep the face in the middle of the circle with some space above the head. The frame starts with breathing room around the subject; widen it on the Frame panel if the crop feels tight.

  • No face detection. The frame is built round the cutout, not round a detected face. Check the circle before saving.

Questions

What size should a WhatsApp display picture be?

WhatsApp does not publish a pixel figure. It shows a square cropped to a circle; 640 × 640 or larger is common practice, which is why the page starts there. The circle on the Frame panel shows exactly what will be cut off.

Can I use a gradient instead of a flat colour?

Yes. On the Frame panel choose Gradient, pick the second colour, and choose top-to-bottom or from-the-centre. It is blended in linear light, so the edge of your hair meets it without a dark rim.

Why JPEG?

A profile picture on a coloured background has no transparency left, and JPEG is smaller and accepted everywhere. Choose Transparent on the Frame panel and the page writes a PNG instead.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The cutout, the background and the file are made in this tab. Only the person model, if you press for it, is downloaded to your browser.
