From GIF to clear GIF in four steps
- Open the GIF. Every frame is decoded in this tab, with the GIF's own timing, looping and transparency.
- Background out of each frame. A flat background is keyed out exactly; anything else is solved frame by frame, each one starting from the frame before.
- Check the frames. The animation plays on a checkerboard; tap any frame in the strip to stop on it.
- Save. A transparent GIF with an edge cut-off, or an animated WebP with soft edges.
What it can and cannot do
- No brush on single frames. Frames are cut with one setting for the whole animation. If a frame comes out wrong, change the tolerance or the method and every frame is cut again.
- GIF edges are hard. GIF has one level of transparency. Choose Animated WebP for soft hair or anti-aliased edges.
- GIF in, GIF or WebP out. Animated WebP files and videos are not opened here.
Questions about GIFs
How do I remove the background from a GIF?
Open the GIF on this page. Every frame is read in your browser, the background is taken out of each one, and the animation plays back on a checkerboard so you can see what is left. Save it as a transparent GIF or as an animated WebP; the timing and looping of the original are kept.
Why does the GIF edge look jagged compared with the WebP?
A GIF pixel is either fully see-through or fully solid; there is nothing in between. The edge cut-off decides which soft edge pixels are kept, and the edge colour option blends the kept rim towards white or dark so it matches the page the GIF will sit on. Animated WebP keeps real part-see-through edges, so it looks smoother wherever WebP plays.
What kind of GIF works best?
One with a plain, flat background — a sticker, a logo animation, a cartoon or a screen recording on white. The page detects a flat background on the first frame and uses the colour key, which is exact. Photographic GIFs with a busy background use the colour-and-contrast solve, where each frame starts from the cutout of the one before so the edge stays steady; results there are rougher.
Is there a size limit?
The first 300 frames are read, and frames are worked on at up to 480 pixels on the long edge so a phone does not run out of memory. The page says when it has scaled a GIF down or left frames out.
Is my GIF uploaded?
No. The GIF is decoded, cut out and written again by code running in this tab. There is no server on the other end to send it to.
